A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by spanning the space they leave behind. Replacing the missing teeth may restore your smile, improve chewing and speaking, support a balanced bite, and help reduce unwanted movement of neighboring teeth.

How a bridge is supported

A traditional bridge uses crowns placed over neighboring teeth to support one or more artificial teeth. Preparing this type of bridge usually requires reshaping the supporting teeth. An implant-supported bridge is secured to dental implants instead of natural teeth.

Your dentist will evaluate your teeth, gums, bone, bite, and the location of the missing teeth to determine whether a bridge is appropriate. Materials may include ceramic, porcelain fused to metal, metal alloys, or a combination selected for strength and appearance.

Caring for your bridge

A fixed bridge cannot be removed at home, so daily cleaning is especially important. Brush normally and clean beneath the artificial tooth using a floss threader, interdental brush, water flosser, or another method recommended by your dental team. Regular exams and professional cleanings help protect the bridge, supporting teeth or implants, and surrounding gums.
