Emergency Dental Care
In pain or facing a broken tooth? Call us — we prioritize relief and work to get you comfortable as quickly as we can.
General & Preventive
If you're experiencing a dental emergency, please call our office as soon as possible so we can help you determine the next step.
Situations that may need prompt care
- A broken, cracked, or displaced tooth
- Severe or persistent tooth pain
- Painful swelling in or around the mouth
- A knocked-out permanent tooth
- Bleeding that is difficult to control
- An object that cannot be gently removed from between the teeth
- An injury involving the teeth, mouth, face, or jaw
If a permanent tooth is knocked out: Act immediately. Pick it up by the crown—not the root—and gently rinse it with water without scrubbing. If possible, place it back into its socket. Otherwise, keep it moist in milk or a tooth-preservation product and contact a dentist immediately. Treatment within approximately 30 minutes may improve the chance of saving the tooth. Do not attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.
When to seek emergency medical care
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately for:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Severe or rapidly increasing swelling of the face, mouth, or neck
- Uncontrolled or heavy bleeding
- Major facial trauma, loss of consciousness, or a suspected broken or dislocated jaw
- Any other potentially life-threatening condition
Most toothaches and broken teeth require urgent dental treatment rather than treatment from a hospital emergency department. When possible, call our office first at (770) 623-8700 so we can help determine the appropriate next step.
