Your care is about more than your smile—oral health is an important part of your overall wellness. As part of a comprehensive exam, we include a visual and tactile oral cancer screening. Identifying a suspicious change early may lead to earlier diagnosis and more treatment options.

Warning signs to watch for

If any of these symptoms continue for more than two weeks, schedule an evaluation with a dentist or medical provider:

• Red or white spots or sores anywhere in the mouth
• A sore that bleeds easily or does not seem to heal
• A lump, thickening, or rough patch of tissue
• Pain, tenderness, or numbness in the mouth or on the lips
• Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue

What the screening involves

The screening is a quick, comfortable part of your exam. We visually examine your face, neck, lips, mouth, tongue, and the back of your throat, and gently feel the tissues for unusual changes. If we notice an area of concern, we may recommend additional testing or refer you to a specialist. A screening is not a diagnosis—its purpose is to identify areas that may need a closer look.

Helping lower your risk

• Avoid tobacco products and limit alcohol consumption.
• Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
• Limit prolonged sun exposure and use SPF lip protection.
• Ask your healthcare provider whether HPV vaccination is appropriate for you.
• Keep regular dental visits so unusual changes can be evaluated promptly.
