A dental crown is a custom restoration that covers and protects a tooth that has been damaged or weakened while restoring its shape, function, and appearance. Crowns may be recommended for teeth that are broken, severely worn, extensively decayed, supported by a large filling, or treated with root canal therapy. A crown can also be placed over a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.

What a crown does

A crown covers the visible portion of a prepared tooth and helps protect the remaining structure while restoring its shape and function. Materials may include ceramic or porcelain, zirconia, metal alloys, porcelain fused to metal, or resin-based materials. Your dentist will recommend a material based on the tooth's location, appearance, bite forces, and your individual needs.

Crowns and partial crowns

When enough healthy tooth structure remains, a partial crown—often called an onlay—may restore the damaged area without covering the entire tooth. Your dentist will determine whether a filling, onlay, or full crown provides the appropriate amount of protection.

Treatment generally involves preparing the tooth, taking a digital scan or impression, and creating a custom restoration. A temporary crown may be placed while the final crown is fabricated. The completed restoration is then checked for fit and bite before being securely attached.
