Veneers are a versatile cosmetic treatment that can improve the appearance of teeth that are chipped, stained, misshapen, mildly crooked, or separated by small gaps. They cover the front surface of the teeth and are designed around your facial features, natural teeth, and treatment goals.

Planning your smile

Treatment begins with an evaluation of your teeth, gums, bite, and cosmetic goals. Any active decay or gum disease should be treated before veneers are considered. Patients who grind or clench their teeth—or have certain bite concerns—may require additional protection or a different treatment approach.

A model, impression, or digital scan may be used to plan the shape, proportions, and shade of your veneers.

How veneers are placed

Depending on the veneer material and your individual situation, a small amount of enamel may need to be removed so the veneers fit naturally. The custom veneers are then checked for fit, shape, and shade before being securely bonded to the teeth.

Because enamel is commonly removed, veneer treatment is generally considered irreversible. Your dentist will explain the preparation required before you make a decision.

Caring for your veneers

Veneers can chip, crack, wear, loosen, or eventually require repair or replacement. To help protect them:

• Brush twice daily and clean between your teeth every day
• Avoid biting fingernails, ice, pens, and other hard objects
• Wear a mouthguard during sports
• Use a nightguard if your dentist recommends one for grinding or clenching
• Continue routine dental exams and professional cleanings

Natural teeth can still develop decay around or beneath veneers. Porcelain veneers generally resist staining better than composite materials, but surrounding natural teeth may change color over time.
