Nitrous Oxide
A mild form of inhaled sedation—often called laughing gas—that can help reduce anxiety during dental treatment.
Comfort & Sedation
Nitrous oxide — commonly known as laughing gas — is one of the gentlest ways we help patients feel more relaxed during a visit. It may be a good option for those experiencing mild or moderate dental anxiety.
How it works
Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small mask placed over your nose. The amount can be adjusted throughout treatment based on your needs. Patients generally remain awake, breathe independently, and can communicate with the dental team. When treatment is complete, the nitrous oxide is stopped and oxygen is administered for a short period to support recovery.
Is it right for you?
Your dentist will review your medical history, current medications, previous experiences with sedation, and planned treatment before determining whether nitrous oxide is appropriate. Please tell us about any health changes, pregnancy, breathing or sinus conditions, recent illness or congestion, or previous reactions to sedation.
The effects of nitrous oxide usually wear off quickly after administration ends, but recovery can vary. Our team will confirm that you are ready to leave and provide personalized instructions about eating, driving, and returning to normal activities.
