Sometimes brushing alone isn't enough to reach the deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. When those areas can't be fully cleaned, they're more likely to develop decay. Sealants add a layer of protection where cavities often begin.

How sealants help

Dental sealants are thin, tooth-colored resins that bond to and harden within the grooves on a tooth's surface. Once a tooth is sealed, those grooves become smoother and less likely to trap plaque — which can make brushing easier and more effective.

Who may benefit

Sealants are often applied to children's permanent teeth as a preventive measure once those teeth have come in. Appropriate adult teeth may also be candidates. Because every patient is different, your dentist will recommend sealants on a case-by-case basis.

Caring for your sealants

A sealant protects a tooth only while it remains fully intact. How long a sealant lasts varies from patient to patient, so we'll check yours during routine visits and can reseal a tooth if a sealant becomes worn or is lost.
